Composing for Percussion
Teachers Andrea Dulbecco, percussionist. Giacomo Platini, composer.
The masterclass will be attended by both teachers, who will examine various aspects of composing for percussion instruments from the perspective of both the performer and the composer.
A number of topics will be proposed for analysis and in-depth study:
- The choice and nature of instruments
- Timbral research
- The management of musical parameters
- Writing for solo percussion, in chamber music, ensemble, or orchestra
- The relationship with performers
Recently composed pieces by Giacomo Platini for the Lugano Percussion Ensemble, “here is the deepest secret nobody knows (la poetica dei metalli)” (2021) for 6 percussionists, and “Come tira l'aria” (2023), for solo violin and 6 percussionists, and the pieces “On Ka” for amplified piano and percussion, “5 souvenirs (doux)” for marimba and bass clarinet, and several numbers from the incidental music for the show “Il Cerchio della Luna” for symphony orchestra. Together with Andrea Dulbecco, he has performed pieces from the contemporary repertoire for marimba and vibraphone, such as: “Reflection on the nature of water”, by J. Drukman, “Five scenes from the show country”, by H. W. Henze, “Mari I and II”, by F. Donatoni, “Vibra-Elufa”, by K. Stockhausen, “Loops II” by P. Hurel, “Omar I and II” by F. Donatoni.

ANDREA DULBECCO
He graduated with honors in percussion instruments with Franco Campioni at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, studied composition, and obtained a diploma in piano. He also specialized in vibraphone with David Friedman. As a soloist, he has played with the Angelicum Orchestra of Milan, the Orchestra of the Graz Conservatory, the RAI of Milan, the San Remo Symphony Orchestra, the Italian String Orchestra, the Virtuosi Italiani, and the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra.
As a chamber musician, he has performed for the most prestigious Italian societies such as the Società del Quartetto and the Società dei Concerti in Milan, the Unione Musicale in Turin, the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, the Amici della Musica in Perugia and Florence, the Accademia Chigiana, and the Teatro alla Scala.
Andrea Dulbecco has collaborated with prestigious artists such as Ugorski, Brunello, Lucchesini, Markus Stockhausen, De Maria, Fisk, Carmignola, Sollima, and Morricone.
He is the permanent percussionist of the ensemble “Sentieri Selvaggi” conducted by composer Carlo Boccadoro, who has also dedicated compositions to him.
In addition to his career as a classical musician, he is also very active as a jazz vibraphonist. He plays and records with numerous internationally renowned artists such as Fresu, Rava, Moroni, Dicastri, Trovesi, Coscia, Negri, Gaslini, Ambrosetti, Schneider, Liebman, Nussbaum, Swallow, Harrell, Favre, Friedman, McCandless, Mainieri, and Elgart. He has performed at important festivals such as Umbria Jazz and Roccella Jonica. He has toured the United States, Mexico, Africa, and the Far East. He has made numerous recordings for the Splash, Egea, and Abeat labels. He has recorded, in duo with Luca Gusella, for the American label Obliqsound.
Andrea Dulbecco teaches percussion instruments at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan.
