A one-day workshop on saxophone techniques and timbres in contemporary music, open to performers and composers interested in broadening their knowledge of the subject. Each participant in the masterclass will receive a copy of the handbook "Composing for Saxophone", which Jonathan Chazan wrote specifically for this type of event. Following the structure of the book, alongside individual and group practice, will enable the topics on the programme to be covered clearly and systematically.
In the first phase, the fundamentals of the instrument will be examined, and we will discuss its strengths, limitations and developments. The second, more in-depth phase will introduce advanced techniques – primarily those developed in the second half of the 20th century – and the similarities with brass instruments.
In the following section, Jonathan Chazan will briefly outline his work, which aims to expand and redefine the saxophone’s timbre by integrating electronic techniques into classical practice. Finally, there will be time for a question-and-answer session and an open discussion.
Following the masterclass, Chazan will perform his solo recital "Electric Sax", featuring works by Telemann, Beja, Alla, Veldhuis, Servian Sforza and Dori.
