Our musical journey through Greece, led by Kyriakos Gouventas—one of the finest Greek violinists active today—will cover a repertoire of melodies from various regions of both the mainland and the islands. From a technical perspective, emphasis will be placed on the unique characteristics of authentic Greek performance. This includes idiomatic scales of modal music—the same found in the Makam system—as well as pentatonic scales. Musical phrasing and bow articulation will mostly adhere to dance rhythms ranging from two to sixteen eighth notes. Similarities and differences between traditional Greek violin technique and classical technique will also be highlighted, and students will work on small musical phrases used in free or rhythmic improvisation.
Biography
Kyriakos Gouventas, born in Thessaloniki in 1966, began his musical studies at the age of twelve. He completed his studies in violin and theory in 1991 at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki, while simultaneously obtaining his L.R.M.S. from the Royal Academy of Music in London. He was a member of the Traditional Music Ensemble of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and was selected by SOAS University of London (School of Oriental and African Studies) as the ideal representative of the expressive uniqueness and idiomatic tradition of the violin in Greece for the "Genius of the Violin" Festival (2004).
He was a lecturer at the Department of Traditional Music in Arta (Technological Educational Institute of Epirus). Since 2005, he has taught traditional violin and coordinated an ensemble at the Department of Music Science and Art at the University of Macedonia. He also teaches at the National Conservatory of Athens and the "Filippos Nakas" Conservatory in Thessaloniki.
Throughout his career, Kyriakos Gouventas has collaborated with all the major figures of Greek popular and traditional music, performing numerous concerts worldwide for over 30 years. His discography exceeds 150 recordings. Additionally, he has edited many of the audio and print publications of the Greek Music Archive.
He has collaborated as a performer and soloist with chamber and symphony orchestras (such as the "Manos Hadjidakis" Music Ensemble, the Camerata, the ERT Orchestra, and the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra), traditional music ensembles (including the Hellenic Music Archives Ensemble, the Chronis Aidonidis Ensemble, and the Domna Samiou Ensemble), numerous singer-songwriters and composers (Mikis Theodorakis, Yiannis Markopoulos, Stamatis Spanoudakis, Christos Nikolopoulos, Nikos Kipourgos, Dionysis Savvopoulos, Socratis Malamas, Nikos Papazoglou, Nikos Xydakis, etc.), and the most prominent singers and musicians on the Greek music scene.
He is a founding member of the musical ensemble Primavera en Salonico with Savina Yannatou, as well as Estoudiantina Neas Ionias.
